Agarwood/Gaharu

Try to adjust to 25% 0r 30% that will be make you much more richer but why not try plant
it your self it not much thing to do like pruning the tree,cut out grass near by the plant ,use
organic fertilizer and watch out for tree worms.Try out plant Aquilaria Sub-integra it grow very fast
than Aquilaria Malaccensis.Try ask if the professor did buy back agar wood chip from farmer.
Agar wood plant is very strong when you cut down from harvest it will grow out many small
branch so choose the biggest branch to wait for second harvest and continue until many time.

The substrain of tree we use only takes 4 years to grow and then inject. We have a fungus treatment created in the USA which provides us with at least AA grade oil, ranging at RM40,000 per litre(it takes 4 trees to make one litre). So your 7 year forecast is for local substrain of tree, which does not produce much oil anyway.
kind regards
Simon

May i know on average how much agarwood can a tree in Laos produce and what is the grade for the wood?
We will be harvesting our first batches of trees in Laos later this year, but we expect to get the same results as achieved in Vietnam and Thailand where CA Kits have already been tested. We have already cut some trees earlier than recommended to monitor the development of resin in the tree and everything looks good. I attach a recent photo taken of one such tree. The proud owner is on the right - he owns one of the largest plantations in Laos - several hundred hectares. He is now a Happy Farmer, hence our company's name. biggrin.gif I'm holding the saw!

QUOTE(eehtsitna @ Jun 8 2008, 10:36 AM)
Did you ever consider that technique that might work for agarwood tree in Laos might not work in Malaysia? We have our own species of agarwood, different microclimate, soil properties, rainfall and alot of other different factors. Not to mention that we need proof/result to backup our claim. Until some research is done on this in Malaysia, we cannot draw any conclusion or make any claim.
Well there is always scope for improvement and that is exactly what Bob and Henry are doing (i.e. aiming to further increase the performance of the CA Kit technology). However, the CA Kit as it currently stands will work equally well for all species of agarwood and in all countries where agarwood trees grow.

QUOTE(amirbashah @ Jun 8 2008, 01:32 PM)
Eehsitna, you still haven't explained the thinning process to me sad.gif
Okok. tongue.gif I will try my best to explain it in detail.

In timber plantation establishment, the first thing that you have to consider is what sort of spacing that you want to use for your plot. You can either choose a close spacing such as 3x3m which has a planting density of around 1100 tree per hectare. OR you can choose a wide spacing such as 5x5m, 5x6m which has a planting density that is lower than that of the 3x3m spacing mentioned earlier.

There are pros and cons on either approach. The close spacing such as the 3x3m will need more planting material in the initial planting stage and not to mention other resources such as labour, time and modal. This spacing will encourage the tree to compete against each other especially for light (canopy establishment) so the trees will grow vertically. And as for the wide spacing mentioned earlier, there are less tree per hectare so the tree will not have to compete too much against each other compare to the tree planted in a close spacing. The tree will grow horizontally (diameter) instead of growing vertically (height).

For timber production, our priority is to grow trees that is tall and straight with less or no forking at all. It is safe to assume that it is true in agarwood production too like what Happy Farmer has mentioned earlier. BUT there is a catch in using a close spacing for plantation establishment. Sooner or later, you will run out of space for the trees to grow (when canopy establishment is achieve). The growth potential of the tree is capped by this factor and the tree will not be able to grow to its full potential.

This is where THINNING treatment comes into play. Usually 1-2 years after planting, you will have to carry out thinning or else it will not be effective. The thinning process is quite straight forward. It is as if you are playing the role of nature where you select and pick out trees that is not growing well (survival of the fittest). By doing so you will free up space for the remaining tree. If our initial planting density is 1100 tree per hectare, after thinning, we will have a density of around 500-600 tree per hectare. Of course this will add up to your management cost but you can still sell those felled tree to generate some return for the time being.

That is really a mouthful! tongue.gif I will try to post something more detail when i get back to the office tomorrow. biggrin.gif Will try my best to answer you guys if you have any question. tongue.gif

PRUNING

Pruning is another standard silvicultural input in tree plantation which is aimed at producing trees without low heavy branches so that long clear boles are formed. The need for pruning depends entirely on the branch development on the lower bole. Well stocked, dense stands discourage early side branch formation and generally require no pruning (Evans 1982). There are two main considerations for pruning, i.e., silvicultural and technical considerations.

Silvicultural considerations

In some species, dead branches soon fall off (natural pruning); in others they persist for many years. For example, Acacia auriculiformis has persistent branches, and pruning must be done if knot-free timber is desired, while such species as Terminalia superba and Neolamarckia cadamba, and most eucalypts have good natural self-pruning ability and rarely need artificial pruning. Eucalyptus grandis and Pinus caribaea are intermediate and have branches persisting for 2-3 years after dying.

Self-pruning is, to some extent, influenced by stand density. Dense, unthinned stands, with trees close together, encourage earlier suppression and death of side branches while they are small. However, the effect on accelerating natural pruning is not much. Of greater importance is the increase in persistence of branches low down the stem in open stands. Where wide spacing and heavy thinning are practised, artificial pruning is essential for all but the most freely naturally self-pruning species if high quality timber is desired.

Technical considerations

The important technical consideration is whether clear, knot-free, and consequently high grade timber is required. For example, wood of such quality is of little importance in plantations grown for:

· Firewood or fuelwood;
· Pulpwood and particle board;
· Low grade sawntimber for uses such as shuttering, and packing cases; and
· Protection purposes such as shelterbelts, erosion control, and stabilisation – in fact, persistent lower branches are often an advantage.

In contrast, clear, knot-free timber is highly desirable or essential for:

1. Veneer production for decorative use, match making, and plywood; knot free timber is needed to ease peeling, improve appearance, and reduce blemishes;
2. High grade constructional timber where uniform strength, and good machining, finishing, and seasoning qualities are important;
3. Various types of poles, e.g. transmission, which need to be smooth for handling, and free of surface snags or holes to prevent entry of fungi or termite into the heartwood which is often not penetrated by preservatives.

THINNING

For most thinning regimes the total volume of timber removed in thinning during rotation amounts to about 40-60 per cent of total production (Evans, 1982). The effects of thinning are:

1. To stimulate diameter growth of the remaining trees;
2. To interrupt stand development by volume reduction, followed by recovery;
3. To redistribute future growth on fewer trees resulting in a stand with a few large trees as opposed to many small ones; and
4. To reduce natural mortality.

Ahmad Zuhaidi and Weinland (2002) suggested that in general, 200 to 300 potential crop trees (PCTs) should be selected for final stand. The desired characteristics of potential crop trees are:

1. Dominant or co-dominant position in the stand;
2. 8 to 9 m bole height;
3. No big side branches;
4. No visible stem damage, disease or epicormic shoots;
5. A straight and vertical trunk;
6. A distinct dominant leader; and
7. No spiral grain or heavy forking.

An even distribution of PCTs is desirable. The selection of small groups of up to 3 trees is permissible. It is not a good practice to sacrifice PCTs for reasons of even distribution when the PCTs reserve does not contain sufficient number of trees. After this stand intervention, the average distance between trees should be 6 to 7 m.

The thinning practice recommended by Ahmad Zuhaidi and Weinland (2002) comprises three main thinning interventions as follows:

First thinning

First thinning is carried out when the average top height of the main crop is about 15 m (preferably diameter at this stage should be around 10 cm). This thinning involves the following steps:

1. Selection and marking of a defined number of potential final crop trees;
2. Removal of trees hampering crown development of the PCTs which could be secondary trees;
3. Removal of wolf trees;
4. Climber control; and
5. Liberation of commercial species in the intervening areas.

Second thinning

Second thinning is carried out when the top height of the main crop averages 20 to 25 m. Three main steps are taken for this operation:

1. Reduction of main crop trees down to PCTs;
2. Climber control on PCTs; and
3. Removal of trees hampering crown development of the selected trees as well as secondary trees.

Third thinning

Third thinning takes place when the average height of the main crop is 30 to 35 m (a 20-year or more rotation is planned). This thinning has two purposes:

1. Reduction of PCTs to the final crop trees ; and
2. Regeneration and final harvest phase (for longer than 20-year rotation), e.g. in the Dryobalanops aromatica stand in FRIM if the next rotation is to be regenerated naturally. Once the regeneration has established itself in sufficient number, felling is carried out to harvest about 50% of the standing stock. The remaining standing stock can be removed when the young regeneration reaches a height of 1.5 m.

That's a good idea, wait for 5 years and then sell the trees straight away. If people want to buy it for RM1,000.00 per tree, the return is still good. I can't wait to start this project, it's been almost a year now. I have to ask the contractor to clear my land as soon as possible. Moreover I have to build fence around my land. That would cost a lot also  sad.gif Have you found the best method for inoculation eehtsitna? This thread has become quite popular recently  smile.gif
*
I am not sure why anybody would pay RM1,000 per 5-year-old-tree without any treatment when they could buy 7-year-old trees from me for less than one tenth of that price!

In the Lao PDR, farmers sell trees at any age from one year upwards but the older they are the higher the price.

Regarding inducement treatment, the only proven and patented treatment worth applying is the CA Kit. All other techniques (and there are many that can produce resin in agarwood trees) are by far inferior. It simply does not make sense to spend money to grow a tree and then treat it with an inferior technique (especially if it costs more than a CA Kit!).

Furthermore, if you want to export the agarwood legally (with CITES certification) then you will need to declare where the wood came from. Since the patent for CA Kits covers all other inducement techniques it will be easy to catch the person trading the agarwood that has been produced using another technique that infringes the CA Kit patent.

So if you want to maximize your profits from your agarwood trees and stay legal, the CA Kit is your only option. Since most of you are in Malaysia you can contact Healthy Business Sdn Bhd for more information about CA Kits (see: http://www.cultivatedagarwood.com/?page_id=6 ) for their contact numbers.

So what is the best solution for this problem? Is it because the trees are planted too close to each other or there are other reasons for it?
*
Yes - too close planting and also lack of correct pruning (to maintain only one leader/main stem) when the trees are young.

So please tell us if you have researched the CA Kit? If you visit www.scentedmountain.com you can see good quality chips produced from CA Kits selling for nice prices. I believe only CA Kits can produce good quality chips; I agree that all the other techniques are only good for making oil.

I know where to get the trees for testing. The only problem is I do not have the techniques to test with. Mind you, some people guard this technique as a trade secret and most of the inoculation technique is the market is expensive. tongue.gif
Not sure why you want to do testing when others have already done the testing for you! If I was a Malaysian tax payer I would be complaining about my government wasting my taxes doing unnecessary research! biggrin.gif Also all the other techniques (i.e. other than CA Kits) are illegal.

The CA Kits are not expensive if you consider the high profits that can be made from applying them to agarwood trees. Spend US$30 on a kit and get back at least $200 one year later! smile.gif

I assume is it USD $200 (RM640*as per current exchange rate*) per tree? Im taking your estimate for future calculation because it is much realistic and I gather you have much experience on this trade (estimate conservatively).
Hi Sham903n,
Yes I estimate conservatively US$200 per tree. The assumptions on which this figure are based are that an agarwood tree of 10 - 14cm DBH (diameter at breast height - 137 cm from the ground) is treated with a CA Kit and yields one year later a minimum of 200 grams of good quality agarwood chips which are currently selling at not less than US$1,000/kg at wholesale price in the country of production. As you can see from www.scentedmountain.com the retail price in a consuming country can be much higher. Actually yields of up to 500 grams of good quality agarwood chips per tree (of above size) have been harvested. Besides the good quality agarwood chips, there will also be a kilogram of lower quality agarwood powder (produced when cleaning the chips) worth about US$30 - 50/kg that can be used to make incense or for oil extraction. Hence I consider the US$200/tree is a conservative figure.

QUOTE(Sham903n @ Jun 7 2008, 05:25 PM)
I have cultivated 500 trees per acre
I reckon that's nearly 1,250 trees per hectare. I believe around 800 - 850/hectare would be better. Anyhow, you can still produce agarwood at the higher tree density but just remember to give Healthy Business a call when your trees are big enough wink.gif this will probably be at around 5-years-of-age (provided you prune them to just one main stem, otherwise a multi-stem tree will take 1 - 3 years longer for the individual stems to reach the right diameter for treatment).

QUOTE(amirbashah @ Jun 8 2008, 11:32 AM)
But what do you mean by pruning?
I mean that when the young agarwood tree is growing (even when it is still in the nursery) it often has a tendency to form two or more main stems, i.e. one or more of the branches tends to become more dominant than is desirable and so it starts to compete with the original main stem. If this side branch is not removed it will form a main stem leading to a mature tree with more than one main stem or trunk. Not all side branches do this, so I don't mean you should cut off all the side branches - but where one side branch starts to become equal in size to the main stem then you can either cut it off or just cut it back a little to reduce its apical dominance. Later on it is good to cut off the lower side branches so that you have a nice clear stretch of main stem in which to apply the CA Kit (because it's difficult to work on a tree when there are many side branches in the way).

QUOTE(amirbashah @ Jun 8 2008, 11:32 AM)
I've called the company which you've mentioned (happy .......?) but unfortunately the worker/officer/manager was on MC that day. I'll call back on Monday. I'm quite interested in the CA kit but USD30 is quite high don't you think? It's near to RM100 per kit. If I have 1000 trees, I would need around RM100,000 to buy the CA kit. That's the current price for the kit, don't forget the price will increase in the future (hopefully not).
You need to call the Healthy company not the Happy one! biggrin.gif Actually I don't know what is the price of CA Kits in Malaysia, that depends on Healthy Business. US$30 is our price in Lao PDR for a number one size CA Kit (including the booster treatment and application service).

I agree that if you have a lot of trees the financial investment to treat them with CA Kits can be very high, but then so can the payback. One strategy would be to treat as many of the trees as you can afford one year, then 12 months later after you have harvested and sold the agarwood you can reinvest your income in treating the remaining trees, i.e. you don't have to treat all 1,000 trees at the same time.

Hello All,

I represent a company in Lao PDR called Happy Farmers Co Ltd We are the exclusive distributor of CA Kits for Lao PDR. CA Kits are the only legitimate inducement technology for agarwood trees. The technology is patented or patent is pending in most of the main producing countries and markets for agarwood. This means that if you export agarwood to a country legally (i.e. with CITES certification) you may be infringing the patent if the agarwood was produced using a technology other than CA Kits.

Regardless of the patent protection, CA Kits are the most cost effective way to produce good quality cultivated agarwood, so you would be wasting your money and agarwood trees if you used any other inducement technology.

My main reason for writing today was to inform you of a great investment opportunity. We can offer you 100,000 standing agarwood trees for US$1 million (the plantation is in Lao PDR). They include about 50,000 trees that are ready to treat immediately with CA Kits (they were planted in 2001). Mixed in with those trees are another 50,000 younger trees of various ages that were replanted in the gaps where the original trees died. The buyer can use the land until the last of the trees are harvested.

Other good news for a potential investor is that agarwood trees treated with CA Kits can now be harvested at 10 12 months after first treatment. In other words the production cycle has been reduced from the original 2 years to just 1 year thanks to improvements in the potency of the CA Kit technology. (This news was received just this week after a recent visit by Prof. Robert Blanchette of the University of Minnesota - co-inventor of the CA Kit - to assess the latest research results in Vietnam).

We can negotiate later the price that we'd charge for CA Kits (one kit per tree) but for the time being you can budget $30/tree (including all materials and application service); this price could be significantly reduced in exchange for a share of the trees at harvest time. You should add say another couple of dollars per tree for security/taking care of the trees (i.e. plantation management). Also, to improve access to the plantation, we advise improving the farm road at a cost of $50,000.

So I estimate a total investment of $1,000,000 (trees) + $1,500,000 (CA Kits) + $100,000 (management) + $50,000 (road) + $500,000 (for processing & marketing costs) = US$3,150,000 (focusing on exploiting the 50,000 mature trees only).

In return, I would estimate conservatively a gross income of 50,000 x $200 = US$10,000,000 after 12 months. (And more money could be made from the 50,000 younger trees in later years).

I reckon this is real bargain and I wish we could finance this deal ourselves but our limited cash resources are already invested in CA Kits and agarwood trees. We are making this offer to other potential buyers, so it's a case of "first come, first served".

Best regards,
Happy Farmer.

Those trees are not so good - they are too tall and thin and they should not have multiple stems. Objective should be to maximise the yield of agarwood per CA Kit, not per hectare of land (because your most expensive input is the CA Kit not the land or tree).

I wish that was true. Actually the plantation needs to be weeded, protected from fire, livestock and thieves. In the wrong place (e.g. poor draining soil) the trees can die of root rot disease (e.g. Fusarium spp) and leaf eating caterpillars can be a serious pest - they have contributed to the death of many agarwood trees in Lao PDR and Vietnam (and perhaps other countries but I don't have any information about that). However all these problems can be avoided/controlled with proper management. If you see my earlier post you will note that I referred to 50,000 out of 100,000 trees being replanted due to the original trees dying - that was simply because the previous plantation owner did not manage his plantation properly.

Im back from a visit to my friends plantations and got some new info (atleast new to me). He is planting multiple types of trees (Sub integra, Crassna, Malaccensis & a Hybrid) from our neighbouring country (cant really say which, but you all know which country that dont have any agarwood tree 10 year ago are now 10 year ahead of us and a major agarwood player, so they are telling that you can get a possible $20k per tree- provided there is no middleman). You can get a young tree for less than RM1 there and he said that the best will be Crassna for chip gaharu or the Hybrid type.. but hybrid having trouble with malaysian climate, but most probable due to the long journey they take to reach here. Also get your self familiar with CITES - Convention on International Trade in Endangered Specieshttp://www.mtc.com.my/mtib_procedure.htm . Regards to inoculations, there, it is sold at RM150 per liter (proven affective base on 10 year experience) compare to RM250-400 (with no proof of affectiveness) sold locally. Its injected at 4th year depends of type of tree - weak 1 will die. The neighbouring country are not secretive on these infos.. if you can understand their language better.. smile.gif cheers.. 17 acres here I come, ohh 1 more thing.. before you go all out cutting your own forest for plantation.. be sure to check if there is any old karas tree growing on your land.. that tree will give you $$$$$$ in less than 2 years after inoculation! take care goodluck.. I hope the goverment is not reading this and make it harder for us to improve our finacial well being (impose licence/tax/this that anything to churn more money to finance the rakyat money churning project-example-gov funded back seat belts paid by tax money-awarded to companies that put $$ in their pockets! Please do give me a contact number because I really don't want to delay planting the trees. Just want to ask your opinion, what's the best species of gaharu tree? Mallacensis, Crassna or Subintegra?

Hi all, I'm a newbie to this forum

I'd just like to share the same interest in cultivated agarwood in which during my years, there has been loads misleading infos regarding cultivated agarwood. Throughout the threads, I do much agree with eehtsitna regarding the infos.

To anyone here who'd like to view a sample on wot an agarwood plantation would be like, or just wanna gain same extra info, or even to actually view the inoculating technique, u guys are most welcome to our humble plantation in Sg. Merab, Bangi. In that particular plantation, we planted a variety of Aq. Malaccensis, Aq. Crassna, Aq. Sub integra and Aq. Hirta (candan) just to compare its growth rate, compatibility and of course the result. As for the rest of our plantations, we focus more on Aq. Sub integra, as from our research with our partner in Trat, it produces more oil and are among the the best oudh oil from cultivated agarwood. (refer 'Cambodian Oudh' pricing)

Just contact us for info regarding seedlings, plantation management, inoculants, distillation process and market and sales of gaharu products.

Amirbashah, bro i believe that our plantation are quite nearby. We have another plantation at Kg. Limau Manis. Can I know where is ur plantation? and wot species are u planting?

My friend is not in Malaysia at the moment. Will try to contact him and ask him regarding the contractor when he is back.

The best species for gaharu production? That is another grey area that needs to be study intensively. No one can say for sure what species is the best but somehow people has relate each species to the final product that you can get out of it.

A. malaccensis - wood chip
A. crassna - oil
A. subintegra - (i am not sure about this though)

Hi eehtsitna,

from our experience and research since all the inoculants nowdays cannot produce a high quality gaharu in chip form, we feel it is much wiser for gaharu planters to focus more on oil producing. from the 3 species above, cultivated of course, all of them can produce oil, and in the market we found out that the market (esp middle easterners) are quite fond of the oil produced by Aq. Sub integra and are willing to pay quite a price! nod.gif
So for us, as for now, we prefer to focus more on Aq. Sub integra + a personnel from a government agency did announce that Aq. Sub integra is the best cultivated gaharu producing species during an international gaharu conference recently held during NATPRO @ PWTC
But anyhow, all of this can be solve by a good marketing strategy combined with a good sales negotiation biggrin.gif

You should see how my land looks like. It's like a forest. I called the supplier of the trees and he said he's willing to plant the trees at a cost. RM2 per tree and he will monitor your trees for 3 months. The supplier will do a survey at my land soon. This is the same person I bought the trees from late last year, Jasben Plantation. They sell it RM5 per tree. I don't know where you could get it much cheaper.

Jasben plantation? Is it the company based in Kelantan? The price for the seedling is reasonable. Regarding the Rm2 per tree planting service, does the cost cover the 3 month monitoring operation? Or was it Rm2 per tree per month? tongue.gif

Bear in mind that when you are clearing the land up, you should leave those big tree around to give some shade to the karas seedling that you want to plant. Even though karas is a light demanding species, it is good to have some shade early in the planting stage to improve the survival rate. Once the seedling has established itself on the site, then you might consider felling those big tree to free up space and to reduce the competition for the karas tree.

The best inoculation technique? I cannot give any recommendation at the moment because I have only tested 1 technique so far. That is why I am trying to get a friend of mine to source out various inoculation technique out there so that I can test it out and later compare the results. I know where to get the trees for testing. The only problem is I do not have the techniques to test with. Mind you, some people guard this technique as a trade secret and most of the inoculation technique is the market is expensive. tongue.gif

at 5th year, you can always sell the trees without inoculation to interested partie$$ oversea$, you dont have to sell the land just the trees and its up to them to innoculate the trees for another 2 years, because its theirs.., you transfer the risk.. they transfer ca$h..
or you can set up a Bhd or Sdn Bhd owning the land planted with agarwood, on the 5th year get a loan from Agro Bank(Bank Pertanian) and inoculate with goverment(rakyat) money... 1 year breathing period just pay service charge use the balance of money to pay 1 year payment... risk bare by your company.. 2years later harvest and pay bank..
need to test on cloning method.. if it works.. I just need 1 cutting from 1 of my friends tree out of the 33 acres .. walla.. super cheap agarwood for 17 acre..
I dont have time for other business.. plus this is passive business untill harvested.. this wont be the only egg in the basket.. just 1 of the basket with eggs..

after doing trials after trials bout this gaharu producing propogation, so far we've came out with a method that doest not require any trees to be fallen and the best part is, the kayu is proven by the market. in other words we've sold & exported tonnes of it late last year

Initially I was very interested in starting a gaharu farm. The numbers quoted were all very impressive. Big numbers of selling prices were mentioned. In Sarawak, I was told that inoculation per tree starts at RM250 per tree where as in Sabah I saw in the Net RM100 per tree. I do not know whether this inoculation is Prof Blanchette CA kit or not or some other proprietary process. No sellers of the inoculation kit offers a guarantee of X% of success and of what grade and qty of agarwood will result. Conservatively do you think you can sell for RM1000 per tree? So your expected profit after 7 years will be (Selling price x no of trees infected) - (cost of seedlings-fertilisers - cost of labour and etc to get to harvesting stage - inoculation - land cost- financing cost) x 100% tree planted. The numbers don't seem so sexy.

However, after stating all that, I can make an economic case if a) you have idle land b) you can find a cheap way to inoculate c) cheap ad hoc labour to tend to the plantation from time to time.

Lastly find a seller who is willing to buy at your expected price. Unless there is an open and fair way to dispose of this wood, you will be subjected to "mafia" pricing. ie take it or leave it. For me, I probably will embark it as an experiment. Plant a few trees, inoculate it with different kits, compare results. If at the end of the experiment and you stumble upon THE magic formula, you don't need to plant trees. Just sell the kit. It is more lucrative. If one inoculation kit doesn't work, you can still try other kits as long as the tree remains alive. You can google all you want, till now I haven;t come across anyone BUYING your raw wood in Malaysia. Sellers are a plenty.

Most Commonly Used Tricks by Investment & MLM Scams

scamNowdays we seen or promoted with many Investment and MLM scheme that promise very high return which is very attractive. Beware! if you seen this kind of scheme. You may loose all your money.
It is very advantages if you could identify it earlier instead of falling to be a victims of such schemes. stopscams007 from Low Yat Forum make a lot of effort in compiling 30 most commonly used tricks utilise by Investment and MLM Scams. I hope with this list lesser people will fall to be victims of such scams.
Here is the list
1.) “Denial” trick – They will claim “we are not mlm”. Knowing that many people don’t support a mlm or direct sales products. Some companies will keep denying they are MLM and used other terms like “franchisee” business, eg. Lampe Berger, STG, IRC; or “investment schemes” eg. Sunshine Empire, GRI, etc;
2.) “Get-A-Job” trick – Example Easypha-max.
3.) “Future Plan” trick – This has been most common in the past. They will tell you a lot of rosy future plans like setting up factory in Malaysia; or going public listed soon and you will be given free shares or priority to buy cheaper chares; or whatever you purchase now be worth much more in the future.
4.) “Secret Formula” trick – on both plan and product. When they cannot explain how the product or their marketing plan works(obviously not if it is a scam) they will tell you “this is Company secret, tell all will means allowing competitors to follow us”. Fixed return on investments(ROI) scams that take monies from the new victims to pay the old ones always use this statement.
5.) “Other Industry” trick – This trick started by Sunshine Empire is most commonly used by those investment scams that promised fixed return. This is the most common trick now. After the failure of investment scams like Sunshine, Mobilwallet, STG, etc many people already know that it’s impossible for products selling or food business to gain such profits margin for unlimited members. So they use other industries like a certain plant or tree cultivation, seaweed, fish, fuel, IT-related development and the latest is “turning waste oil into crude oil” with office at Mont Kiara. Others out soon(being planned now) are church-related, shipping industry, space industry, etc
6.) “Long History” trick – You probably heard many times on this. Those MLM Companies that have longer history will use this trick to “bully” the newer companies but what has that got to do with their products or whether it is a good business ? They will tell you their Company is stable because of a longer history (don’t they have their beginning too ?) or used products supplier’s history which do not belong to them.
7.) “Testimonials” tricks on both products(esp healthcare products) and on the business opportunity. Nearly every healthcare products MLM used it. Sunrider, Morinda, SNE, BioYoung and many others, where have they all gone now if their products are so good ? Most of the time, the effects are placebo(see no. 13 below) or exaggerated. Testimonials are commonly used for the income opportunity too. They will always tell you so and so in their company earned a lot but NEVER caution you that over 99% of those who joined earlier have left or lost some money.
8.) “Moneyback gurantee” trick – Is this a trick too ? Certainly ! This trick works well because people fill safe in paying for it BUT when you try to claim your money back; here are the common senario: your introducer or seller is hard to locate now, there is a 10% “certain fee” not brought to your attention earlier, certain offer items are not returnable; or your upline will beg you not to return because commissions they and you earned need to be refunded.
9.) “International” trick – They will tell you their organisation has reached many countries, so what ? What has that got to do with you and your money which you are going to pay ? In some cases, foreign based MLM Companies are actually Malaysian-created with a virtual office addressed overseas. Some US claimed companies don’t even do much business in US. Past examples are Enrich, Xango, etc
10.) “Professionals” trick – most commonly used are doctors and lawyers. Doctors and Lawyers who speak for any business have poor code of ethics and comnpanies who used such tricks are worse.
11.) “Doctors Endorsement” trick – Can we trust doctors who breach their own code of ethics ?
12.) “Legal Agreement” trick – This one is most common now in investment scams. You think legal documents will protect you? They are used to earn your confidence or take away your rights, more later. In most of their agreements, they have a clause included that the Company can change any conditions in future leaving the members no rights to take actions against them. Past examples of this trick are MobilWallet and STG. Their bosses, offices and restaurants are still around but members cannot do anything legally.
13.) “Placebo-effect” trick – Used widely by Fusion Exel and those energy pendant sellers. Placebo effects are more significant and effective from “energy” products like those made from magnets, ceramic or lava soils. When the users(normally MLM members) believe and have greater faith in them, a certain inner energy can be produced that may be good enough to cure some illness or symtoms. After the enthusiasm is over, you will find the product no longer effective. This is one of the reason why MOST of those MLMs selling health products are gone. I am sure we have all experience with doctors too. If you lack confidence with a certain doctor or medicine, it may not work for you because your inner energy from your own placebo effect is working against it.
14.) “Chemical Reaction” trick – Remember the footpatch that cheated so many people ?
15.) “Give you downlines” trick – This is a fishing trick used most commonly in those called binary plan. Some Management can even create new accounts for you to be placed somewhere on top; or they will tell you “I will give you a very strong line from Indonesia or Thailand, all you need is just build one leg”
16.) “Free Body Checkup” trick – They will use a gadget or some machines to do for you a free check and later recommend you to buy their product and claim it will work for your problem. Some of them do not even tell you their purpose when they invite you for the “free” checkup. After you entered their office and did the check-up, you are trapped !!
17.) “Only-we-have-products” trick – Mostly OEM products that no one knows or trusts. This is traditional in every MLM business. Everyone will claim that ONLY their Company has the product. Of course, because they simply contract a manufacturer to manuafcture for them. In most cases, the products are much more overpriced compared to similar products of another brand available over the counter. Such products are usually not value-for-money and only in the beginning because they are bought up by the distributors or the members of the company. Past examples are Forever Living, Sunrider, Bio-young, XKL, Morinda(Noni juice), Nu-skin, For-Life, Reliv, Xango, SNE etc. They all started with a hype and great volume during the 1st one or 2 years and quiet down later when even their hig-ranking members will no longer buy them.
18.) “Brainwashing” trick – wow, this is going to be long…….
19.) “Training” tricks – They only tell you “not to quit” but not why and how you will fail. While training is good for one’s personal development, it can be harmful if you are trained in a misleading way by any particular Company. Take Amway for example, I am sure everyone of you has a friend or 2 who swear that they will NEVER leave or quit the Company 5 or 10 yeras ago(all due to their great trainings, brainwashings and motivations) but disappeared now due to embarrassment. My advice is “since 99%(statistics don’t lie) of all MLMs or pyramid schemes business members will not be successful or make it to richness, NEVER close your back door by swearing you will never quit.” Another such example is QuestNEt that started with that no-value gold-plated coin that ask for over RM1000 each. Their members(mostly youngsters) are all trained to approach at least 100 prospects before they should quit. It will only lead to more victims and when they eventually quit, they will be so disillusioned that they will never want to get back into any form of business.
Remember this example if you are ever trained or brainwashed not to quit a business:
A fly inside a closed room saw a big heap of delicious rubbish outside through the closed window. The fly has the motivation, aim, goal, an action plan(everything ever needed and trained for achievement) to knock down the window and get out for the rubbish. With a “Never Quit” attitude, the fly will knock the window until it gets killed. So much on trainings and brainwashings.
20.) “Tee Up” trick
21.) “Good People” trick – announcing they are of a certain religion or vegetarians
22.) “Chicken & Duck Talk & Physcology” trick – This is also very common now and used by nearly every MLM or scam with a good training department eg: When you question them on the business module and suspect a scam or when you have cornered them, they will give you answers like:
“In any buisness, you need to work for your income, there is no guranteed income”,
” I am afraid you have been misled by others or heard too much negative things from those who are not even how members, so how could they know better than us ?”,
“Failures always find excuses not to work, successful people always find ways to succeed”
“Birds of the same feathers always flock together – Only failures listen to failures(we listen and learn from our successful leader in our company”
“Those who failed or left are jealous, so they condemn us”
“No one force them or point a gun on their head to make them join”
I am sure you have heard much more, maybe help to contribute ?
23.) “All are Pyramids” trick
24.) “Confusing” Plan trick
25.) “Company Background” trick – They are big in China or U.S. – What has that got to do with the products?
26.) “Treat You” trick – Let’s come out for yum cha and there is a free makan !! Greedy people will get this one.
27.) “Gadgets-Testing” trick
28.) “High Repeat Sales” trick
29.) “Impressive” trick – Normally on their office or website
30.) “Figures” trick

Continue to read my other post to avoid the investment pitfalls: Hottest Scams in Malaysia?

Disclaimer: This is just a personal view and I do feel the highest pyramid scheme in our world is the corporate world since we are just slave to the CEO which gets the highest salary and we are just the slave to them. The only way to escape this to become the CEO or business owner and let other people become the slave :P  Well I still believe there are good MLM out there which will can build a lasting business and build our character as well. Recommend Robert Kiyosaki's books if you want to get out of the rat race. Be well and live well. The force is within you ^_^

Hottest Scams in Malaysia?

Previously, we looked at Most Commonly Used Tricks by Investment & MLM Scams which contributed by stopscams007 from Low Yat Forum. He also make a good compilation on the hottest scams in Malaysia. I hope with the list we are more aware of potential scams and lesser people will fall to be victims.
Here are the lists.
1.) The Cafe Scams – Island Red Cafe & Stevens Corner(strange, both in Pandan Indah) – Island Red Cafe collects members RM6,000 each and promised 5% return every month and even give you a name in the ROC as a shareholder but what’s the point when they run away ? Stevens Corner, the famous indian coffee shop follows due to drop of business since their renovation. They collect RM3,000 per member and promise return of RM150 monthly and plans to open nice fanchisee cafe called StevensTeaGarden. Someone mentioned they will make you sign an agreement that give them the rights NOT to pay you anything in future. If you really wish to join, ask for a copy of their agreement and consult your lawyer BEFORE paying them. Bet you will NOT get a copy. Both collect monies from new members with MLM recruitment schemes and pay the old members like Sunshine Empire. You never know when they will run away.
2.) Sunshine Empire – This licensed and legal Company has an impressive office at the ground level of KUB building along Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, near Menara Public Bank and AmBank Building. They also have a showroom office at the ground level in the next building. 2 or 3 months ago, Singapore’s Straits Times and The Paper published big news reminding their people to be careful and NOT to believe in them. Hope someone can put up the link or google for it.(As expected, they STOPPED paying back members now and all investors LOST their money).
Someone below has put a link to the Singapore news. In fact there are more to it. Although Singapore is investigating them, they did not stop their business as the business is legal and so far, no Singaporean have failed to receive their commissions as promised. Thus, the government cannot stop them yet.
The news published that the founder, director and group president is someone named James Phang but he is NOT the owner. Isn’t this quite strange ? At the end of the game, James Phang can just disappear from the Company easily and claimed that he was just “employed”. Such trick always happened in scam businesses.
Now, the Company has STOPPED paying commissions and interests to members with the excuse that the Singapore government has freezed their bank account while under investigation. Do you think their boss will be so stupid to keep much monies in the bank to be freezed ? They are all transfered away. It’s just an excuses not to pay back to members and members are only paid “e-bonus-points” which is cashless. If they wish to convert to cash, they have to recruit new members to pay them cash and the recruiter less out trom the amount. So victims act like Vampires and “forced” to victimise other victims if they wish to get their monies back. And their victims will later transform to vampires and the scam carries on…..
3.) MOBILWALLET – This Company owned by 2 young men, Stanley & Rey Gan, office in Queens Avenue Park has collect multi-millions the last 2 years. Claimed that they tied up with Telekoms, Utility Board payment like Water & Electricity bills, even Maybank got fooled by them. Advertisement Billboards everywhere. They STOPPED paying back their members few months ago and the members cannot do anything because they are made to sign an agreement unaware that they have to claims if the company stopped paying them by CHANGING terms and policies.
4.) Water businesses – Oxygenated and alkaline water products – Some of these are bottled water and some are filters or equipment that claimed the trick. One of the better known Company that sold “oxygen” water is SITO(supposed to stand for Selangor International Trading Organiszation and claimed Selangor State Government owned some share in it). The key person and founder is a Dato Robert Ong from Rawang but his name is no longer in the business now. Their products are sold for RM2 to RM3 for a 350ml bottle and now concentrating mostly in the Indian market. Their Chinese and Malays market are long gone since a year or 2 ago. Their customers are made to believe that their water has more oxygen and able to give miraculous effects for the body. Water is H2O, how to put more O into it ? Anyone knows how much oxygen do we breathe into our body everyday at FOC ? Latest news is that this SITO Company is going to create new label to market under a new Company since the SITO name has already gone bad. Someone informed that this Company is owing alot of money(due to refunds) to ex-stockists but just refuse to pay them.
(Latest news, SITO shifted to another place and their MLM business has closed but planning to start again with a different name, beware !!)
Alkaline Products – Can anyone explain how it can work for the body ? The stomach’s gastric liquid is so acidic that water of any pH that goes through it will not make any difference.
5.) Car Fuel Booster – K-Link, the famous scam MLM Company that sold the footpatch TAKARA, later the “cock-ring” and energy-card launched the patrol-saving pills last year. Got so hot that even grocery shops are selling for them. Recently many of these cars that used the pills are rushing to the workshops to clean the residual. Few months ago, another MLM Company launched a fuel booster gadget, claimed that saves up to 20% fuel, that is attached to the cigarette lighter. Started off well using binary plan but businese begin to fade now and most users find it NOT effective.
6.) Perfumery Products (eg. Lampe Berger & Bel Air)(more details later). Lampe Berger is not so hot now in the neighbouring countries but there are still new victims every month in Malaysia. Must thanks to those who have contributed and kept the thread alive here in Kopitiam. Bel-Air have closed in Malaysia. LB is almost zero in Singapore. This perfumery product from France with over 100 years history are just bottles and fragrances(check the factory’s website) but the Company marketing them in Asia claimed “aromatheraphy” products. Hong Kong TVB aired a program that exposed their scam but their members claimed that HK’s TVB already apologised to them(no evidence, of course). Note that the biggest strenght in a MLM Scam is their members will go all the way to lie in order to defend for their Company. The reason is simple; these members fear that they will not be able to make their money back if the Company collapsed. Knowing that the Lampe Berger products are moving slow, they add a line of skincare products named Estebel, also claime to have over 100 years history in France.(Hardly anymore Chinese newcomers, they are now tapping the Malays in Malaysia). Mostly only Bumis active members now but their top earner Steven Yeam have already left and started a new MLM Company(see NEW SCAMS below).
7.) Energy Products (eg. stone pendants, bracelets, mattress and pillows). They use all sorts of gimmicks and demonstration to make you into believing them. They will do some tricks and demo to prove that these products really produce energy BUT is there any tricks in their demo ? So what if there really produce energy; is it good or strong enough to help the body ? Are those simple products made of some simple materials worth RM300 to up to RM3000 each ? The effect is actually PLACEBO which I will elaborate in a new thread soon.(more details later)
8.) Hi-Tech products (names like bio-tech, nano-tech that claimed millions of dollars of research involved, eg Bio-Young and XKL few years ago). Most of these will claimed a professor behind them(even with name and picture of a person) or used words like “U.S.A. formula”, “German Technology” or “Nanotechnology” but with no further details. If you ask for more details like the professor or factory’s address, the answer will be “trade secrets”.
9.) Investment Schemes – SWISSCASH is the King of all. Swisscash is nearly over now but there are many similar and smaller ones that are still on.(Now, it’s closed or stopped paying back members)
10.) GoldQuest – This Company that claimed to be HK-based started with some non-value gold-plated coins that are sold for over RM2,000 have several names and changed products several times. QuestVacation, QuestNet, etc. They have several offices in Amcorp Mall, PJ and their key person(in fact, the owner), a Malaysian Indian was arrested last year in Indonesia for having involved in a very big Phillipines scam. Most of their overseas offices are closed or inactive but their Malaysia business is still hot, with some “energy” products.(Can someone please provide a link which showed the news that their boss was involved in a big scam in Philippines and was arrested last year ?)
11.) Numerology & Fortune telling – A Company named Visiber is using MLM to sell fortune telling classes using your birthday based on Numerology fortune telling. Prpspects will be told that they need to buy a certain “number” between 1 to 9 in the form of pendants or bracelets made of silver with stainless steel or platinum plated, and sold from RM600 to RM20,000. Customers, or rather victims are mostly females from rural areas. Very hot in Penang now and a number of spin-off Companies have started.
12.) MJ-Life – This Company boost of a very big background with many many years of history which is NOT true. Their people or associates may be long in business but nothing to do with their MLM launched recently. Why do I consider it a scam or bad ? New members are told to pay a sum of money(up to RM1000) and you get NOTHING for it. You only get a membership can entitle you to enjoy all sorts of special price and discounts when you have medical check-ups in their centres. They will claim all those check-ups cost more if done elsewhere. It’s not true. Only the naive and those new to medical check-ups will fall victims to them. Most members who paid the money ended up with nothing.
13.) Seaweed Venture Scams – 1 such Company is located in Taman Maluri, Cheras. They will ask you to invest a few thousands ringgits for their venture of growing seaweeds in East Malaysia and you are guaranteed returns. To gain your confidence further, they will tell you your investment money is secured by “insurance” or “unit trusts” & “trustees”. When you ask for further documents to prove, they will give all sorts of excuses or just ignore you because they know they cannot get you. These Seaweed scam is one of the hottest now, warn all your friends about it before they are victimised.
14.) MXM(previously MGM) – This is a master scam owned by a Dato Kam(Pathlab) tapping the younger group, very successful 2 or 3 years ago but since they moved to their big 10-storey office at Phileo Damansara and changed name to MXM, their business dropped. They collect members RM3,000 to RM4,000 with credit card monthly easy payment and in return you get a hospital benefits insurance from Pacific Insurance worth only a few hundred RMs together with some you-don’t-need medical check-ups from their associate Company Pathlab. Also talk about fitness, lifestyles bullshit that is all worthless.
15.) Gano Excel/I-Touch Life/GEW2u – This company from the north, a copycat of DXN selling Lingzhi capsules created a new Company called Gano iTouch to cash-in on the internet like e-Cosway after their Company went down the drain since the last 2 years, selling Linzhi and some no-value energy pendants and alkaline water gadgets. They provide free transport every weekend from KL to visit their Alor Star office. It did not work well and recently in mid-2009 changed name to GEW.
16.) NuLife(HK) – This Company started by some HK people has been in Malaysia for more than 10 years but they have flopped in HK and Malaysia due to bad management and a product scam making use of a prosecuted American named Dr Jeffrey Bland, found guilty of false products claim. Since this case in the US leaked out and many Malaysians found out that the real boss in HK is a Steven Tang(he cheated many Malaysians in another scheme about 20 years ago) their business went down all the way. Now they claim Malaysian partners cheated them and start a new Company in Malaysia. Watch out, this new Company will come out with some investment scheme idea that will get many to lose their money.
17.) Arowana Fish Breeding, Oora from Germany, Biofuel (Kompleks Maluri) etc – These are some newer scams. Arowana fish venture ask you to invest some money and give you fixed return. Biofuel will tell you their Indonesia connections(just like Sunshine Empire before using Taiwan) & Oora from Germany(I never trust those cruel Germans) that market some bio-chips and a gadget that claims to give energy and therapeutic effects of accupunture, tai-chi, yoga, etc depending how you set the toy-like gadget, wear it on your body and you get the effect later. They could not explain or provide any demonstration to prove their effectiveness. Only doctors and papers claim that I will never trust. The health effect is actually PLACEBO, which I will elaborate in a different thread.
18.) Easy-Pharmax – How could I missed this out earlier. I thought I mentioned this until I got e-mails asking me about it. This is easily in the TOP 3 during the last 2 years. Owned by a Dato Yeap(another Dato !!) Members are tricked to invest up to RM40,000 with the false promise that the Company will use e-commerce and online selling to dispose their goods and recover their monies. It won’t happen, of course.
19.) Gold Investment Scheme – This is an old trick but back again by several Companies promising a GURANTEE FIXED RETURN income like many other schemes. Try to ask for a copy of their fixed return agreement and consult your lawyer. Common sense tell you any business that promises a fixed return to UNLIMITED numbers of investors, higher than bank interests must be a scam.
20.) Score-A or Skor-A – This Company sells you an online program of past Malaysian examinations papers for primary and secondary school students for self-testing for up to a few hundred RMs per membership. It actually cost them nothing. Members are told to invest in a few units, again using MLM with the promise of getting rich. The same program can be purchased from Utusan for just a fraction of their price and you can get better programs.

NEW SCAMS

21.) GRI (Global Royal International) – The boss behind this scheme is multi-billionaire James Pang(the big scammer waiting for trial in Singapore because of Sunshine Empire). Before Sunshine Empire, he operated NOP and SwissCash. This time, he is using a lot of representatives and MLM leaders since his passport is held by Singapore government and he cannot come to Malaysia. I am told that anyone who is bold enough to call himself a MLM leader in Malaysia can visit his rep in Malaysia or Singapre and they will be given at least RM5,000 as some expenses subdsidy if you are willing to market for them.
22.) One Community Worldwide – Tapping a mostly Bumi market and owned by Steven Yeam(SYN) and Willie Lim of Lampe Berger previously(the Chinese no longer trust them). They are selling a negative ion mattress for RM25,000 !! The same modal, I have seen before for RM2000 from Korea. If you cannot afford RM25K ??? You can buy therapy package for RM300. Don’t believe in such product ? You can go for some chlorostrum(virgin cow’s milk from nowhere)
23.) English-Learning Program Online – ESL(an online English learning program) You are asked to pay RM100 for one or 2 years usage of online learning. Started by a Malaysian Indian man by the name of Dr. Edward, this program has changed names at least 2 or 3 times since the last one year due to poor response and a lot of “technical problems”. I consider it a scam because you are paying money for nothing tangible to direct-selling company through MLM and their program has been very “unstable” as my source put it.
24.) Genius Theme’s vacation and rewards package. Such timeshare holidays scheme are being sold for RM400 to RM499 and you are promised a few nights stay in Thailand or Bali. Started by a Company name Max Generation, they wholesale to some MLM Company and other Company like Sen Heng, one of them is Genius Theme, a subsidy of a Maxis agent Company. Looks like many people will lose money. If this Company runs away, those hotels and the MLM Companies need NOT be responsible. Genius Theme is using MLM and direct sale to sell for RM499 or RM599(include a flying experience) while Sen Heng is giving it away free if you purchase over RM2000 products. Of course, they are othere hidden costs to be paid, it’s NOT really free unless you pay MORE upfront.
25.) Another one is an “online gaming” program using MLM, started by Steve Tan, founder of Xango in Malaysia, also aimed at youngsters.
